“How Towns (do not) Remember”

Проводиться у м. Рівному з 2017 року

About school

The competition commission selects 20 participants from different regions of Ukraine to participate in the school. The organizers refund the fare and provide accommodation and meals for the participants during the summer school, and provide educational materials for free.
Participants in the summer school can be: university students, graduate students, young researchers (up to 35 years), teachers of history and other social and humanitarian disciplines, employees of museums and archives, representatives of mass media and authorities, and public activists.
Lectures and trainings are held by the representatives of the NGO “Mnemonics” and invited Ukrainian experts in the field of memory studies.

August 7-11, 2017

1st Summer school “How Towns (do not) Remember” was devoted to the following topics: “Symbolic space of cities in the theories of memory policy”, “Monuments and memorials in the urban memory culture”, “Commemoration of the genocide victims in urban memorial landscapes”, “Museum practices in the symbolic space of cities”, “Non-dominant groups in the symbolic space of cities”.

August 6-10, 2018

2nd Summer school “How Towns (do not) Remember” was devoted to the following topics: “Symbolic space of cities in dilemmas of (non) remembering”, “Monuments and memorials in the urban memory culture”, “Commemoration of the genocide victims in urban memorial landscapes”, “Literature and documentary videos in dimensions of collective memory,” “Museums and theme cafes as agents of collective memory.”

3d Summer school “How Towns (do not) Remember” was devoted to the following topics: “Symbolic space of cities in dilemmas of (non) remembering”, “Competing meta-narratives and inclusive approaches to forming urban memorial space”, “Commemoration of the genocide victims in urban memorial landscapes”, “Monuments and memorials in the urban memory culture”, “Museums as subjects of collective memory formation.”
