Info about the Center and its staff
NGO "Center for Studies of Memory Policy and Public History "Mnemonics" is a voluntary, independent, self-governing non-profit public association whose main purpose is scientific studies in memorial policy and public history, search, development, and promotion of optimal democratic models in the field of memory policy of Ukraine. The Center was established on January 28, 2016 on the initiative of Rivne historians – Maksym Gon, Petro Dolhanov, and Nataliia Ivchyk.

How to create an inclusive model?

Ways of forming an inclusive model of memory culture in Ukraine
Inclusion of the memory of non-dominant social groups (ethnic, religious, women's history, etc.) in the history and public representations of the Ukrainian past.
Engaging of civil society representatives in policy-making in the sphere of memory policy. Organization of advocacy campaigns aimed at creating an inclusive memory policy model.

How do we do this?

Forms of our work

    Memorialization
    We set up memorial signs dedicated to the history of non-dominant social groups. We also form an inclusive memorial space in Ukrainian cities.

    Modern educational tools
    We create modern educational tools for schools and universities for the study of multicultural history of Ukraine.

    Non-formal education
    We organize summer schools, workshops, trainings, and educational seminars on historical topics.

    Academic studies
    We organize academic conferences, round tables, prepare and publish scientific articles and monographs.

    Commemoration
    We introduce new commemorative practices in urban spaces. These practices are consistent with the mission and values of the organization.

Maksym Gon
Director of the Center,
Chairman of the Expert Council of the Center
Doctor in Political Science, Head of the Department of Political Sciences of Rivne State Humanities University.
Scientific interests: memory policy, ethno-political processes, history of genocides.
In 1998, Maksym Gon got the PhD degree in Political Science. The topic was "Activities of Jewish Political Parties in Western Ukraine in the Context of Ukrainian-Jewish Relations" (1918-1929).
In 2007, he defended the dissertation for the degree of Doctor in Political Science. The topic was "Interethnic Interaction in Western Ukrainian Lands in the interwar period".
Maksym Gon participated in scientific and methodological seminars in the USA, Israel, Germany, France, and Poland.
Nataliia Ivchyk

member of the Expert Council of the Center
PhD in History, Associate Professor of the Department of Political Sciences of Rivne State Humanities University.
Scientific interests: memory policy, ethno-political processes, history of genocides.
In 2012, Nataliia Ivchyk got the PhD degree in History. The topic was "Polish and Jewish Questions in Tsarist Politics in Right-Bank Ukraine (second half of 1850s - beginning of 1880s)."
Nataliia participated in scientific and methodological seminars in Israel, Germany, and Poland.
Viacheslav Dolid
member of the Supervisory Board of the Center
PhD in History, Vice-rector for scientific-pedagogical and educational work of Rivne Regional Institute of Postgraduate Teacher Education.
Scientific interests: history of international relations, history of colonialism, post-colonial theory.
In 2010, Viacheslav Dolid got the PhD degree in History. The topic was "The Transvaal Crisis in the Assessment of British Political Science and Society (1895-1896)."
Volodymyr Zyl

Chairman of the Board of NGO "Association "Center for Political Studies and Analytics", Director of NGO "Center of Public Action "CIVITAS", Applicant for the Department of History of Ukraine during the Second World War, Institute of the History of Ukraine, National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.
Scientific interests: genocidal practices, ethnic cleansing, massacres, deportations, social and demographic history of World War II.
Participant in educational programs, seminars, and trainings in Ukraine, USA, Bulgaria, and Germany.
Dmytro Aladko

PhD in Comparative Linguistics, Associate Professor of the Department of Romance and Germanic Philology of Rivne State Humanities University.
Scientific interests: general and comparative linguistics, lexicology, semantics, nomination theory, translation theory.
Member of the international professional association of translation and localization companies "The Globalization and Localization Association (GALA)".
Dmytro participated in linguistic scientific conferences and seminars in Ukraine, Poland, and Hungary.
In 2011, Dmytro Aladko got the PhD degree in Comparative Linguistics. The topic was "Typology of kitchenware names in the English and Ukrainian languages."
Iryna Zakharchuk
member of the Expert Council of the Center
Doctor in Philology, Professor of the Department of Ukrainian Literature of Rivne State Humanities University.
The author of the monograph "War and the Word (The Militaristic Paradigm of the Literature of Socialist Realism)" (2008) and co-author of the collective monograph "Babi Yar. History and Memory" (2016). The literary editor of the book by Ann Applebaum "Red Hunger. Stalin's War against Ukraine" (2018). The member of "Verba Magistri" International Methodology Laboratory, founded by the Ukrainian Research and Education Center for the Study of the Holodomor (HREC in UKRAINE).
Scientific interests: trauma studies, Holodomor studies, memory studies.
Tetyana Vodotyka

PhD (History), Senior Research Fellow of the Institute of History of Ukraine of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Editor-in-Chief of the e-journal of Urban Studies "City: History, Culture, Society", project coordinator of the Center for Urban Studies.
Author of non-fiction on the history of entrepreneurship in the second half of the 19th century (Space of Opportunities: Ukraine in the Age of Iron and Steam, 2018, Success Stories. Outstanding Ukrainian businessmen of the XIX century, 2019).
Research interests - economic history, business history, history of the 19th century.
Alla Hnatiuk
accounting support
PhD in Economics, Associate Professor, lecturer of economics disciplines in Rivne College of National University of Bioresources and Nature Use.
Scientific interests: problems of organization of accounting system in business activities, harmonization of principles of accounting and tax accounting.
In 2013, Alla Hnatiuk got the PHD degree in Economics. The topic was "Assessment and accounting of fixed assets in the agricultural business".
