The thematic issue of the journal «City: History, Culture, Society» “Holocaust and the City: Spaces of Murder – Spaces of Destruction”: Open Call For Articles

Relevance. The Holocaust was the destruction of the fate of not only the Jewish people but also dozens of cities – Kyiv, Rivne, Berdichev, Vinnytsia and so on. These losses – in the demographic, cultural, economic, mental spheres – are virtually indistinguishable. The special issue project focuses on the academic understanding of the complex issues of the Holocaust history, the updating of existing research, the search for new topics and emphases. It is important to draw public attention to the problem of commemoration the memory of the Holocaust victims in Ukrainian cities, to represent the current state and prospects for change in this plane. The initiative also aims to foster further academic discussion on Holocaust and Ukrainian-Jewish relations in cities.

The problems to research:
•Urban space – a trap or a hiding place?
•The response of urban communities to the Holocaust.
•Scars on the body of the city – places of shootings, prisons, forced labor camps, ghettoes.
•Empty (abandoned) spaces in the city.
• Places of (non) remembrance.
•The city as a space for interethnic relations in the Holocaust.

The proposed special issue is planned as multidisciplinary and will include articles by historians, political scientists, sociologists, and ethno-psychologists engaged in urban studies and the Holocaust.

The articles will be peer-reviewed by Ukrainian and foreign experts.

In the focus of research: Central and Eastern Europe

The special issue languages are Ukrainian and English.
